  • Memory capacity. Some cryptocurrencies use DAG files. These are data sets larger than 1 GB, which get into the card’s memory when the coin mining process starts. For example, the DAG file of ETH before the “Merger” reached 5 GB, and models with indicators below this value became irrelevant.
  • Cooling. Mining needs to be constantly, and with overheating, the graphics processor will not last long.

Overclocking is a change in the basic settings of the graphics processor to increase the speed of computations and reduce power consumption.

The following programs will be required to do this:

  • GPU-Z – to view the indicators.
  • MSI Afterburner – for overclocking.
  • Furmark – for performance testing.

MSI Afterburner allows you to track changes in real time. You will need two parameters:

  • Core Clock – core frequency.
  • Memory Clock – memory frequency.

Overclocking the graphics card can void the warranty.

The overclocking instructions are as follows:

  1. The first thing to do is to test the graphics card with basic settings (+0 Core Clock / +0 Memory Clock) and record the data. It is better to change the values separately from each other. After each update you need to test.
  2. Some models may have a high temperature rise. For example, GeForce RTX 3090 is prone to memory overheating. Maximizing fan speed will reduce the probability of possible damage.
  3. In Core Clock, add 20-30 Mhz each up to the highest hash rate.
  4. In the FurMark program, run a stress test. If an error appears, you should go back to the previous step and increase by a smaller amount of Mhz.
  5. The same goes for Memory Clock. It is necessary to gradually make the frequency higher by 50 or 100 up to the maximum hashing speed. It is necessary to start from 0.
  6. After adjusting the core and memory frequency, you can reduce power consumption. To do this, you just need to gradually make the power lower by 10% until a suitable value.
  7. Overclocking the graphics processor can lead to malfunctions, so it is worth testing for a few days. If there are signs of instability, it is better to put the basic parameters and run the card again. The process can be repeated until the best settings are found.
