Crypto-payments remain one of the most resilient applications of blockchain. However, despite early success and rapid growth in the early 2020s, the sector is now in decline. According to The Block Pro, new projects peaked in 2021 with 38 startups, but the subsequent bear market has severely curtailed activity. There are now 146 crypto-payments related startups in the industry. They fall into 4 main categories: protocols, applications, infrastructure solutions and gateways. This allows the sector to maintain its basic functionality, but a new wave of interest and support is required for further growth. One of the key factors that could bring crypto payments back to popularity is the updated legislation in the US. Many experts agree that laws expected in 2025 that are friendly to the digital coin sector will ensure that companies can integrate such assets into payment processes. “If Congress passes laws that will simplify the use of cryptocurrencies in everyday life, the market may get a 2nd chance to develop,” says an analyst of The Block Pro.
Among the “old-timers” of the market we can highlight Ripple, which has been developing solutions for cross-border payments since 2012. This project not only became the basis for subsequent developments, but also proved that cryptocurrencies are able to compete with traditional financial systems. The current downturn is explained by both global economic difficulties and lack of innovation.
Nevertheless, blockchain experts are confident that cryptocurrencies still have potential. One of the advantages remains the reduction of commissions and transaction processing time, which makes such solutions especially relevant for international transfers. It is also worth considering the role of regulators in other countries. For example, Europe continues to work on creating a legal framework for cryptocurrencies. This may prompt US regulators to take active steps. In the case of concerted efforts on the part of world leaders, the crypto-payments market may reach a new level.
